Once again, cycling legend Jens Voigt joined us for our last 10 of the year, being in the New Forest for his annual Shutuplegs ride, organised by our friend Stuart Grace, to raise money for Epilepsy UK (and this year also Canine Partners).  Unknown to most, six-time World champion Marion Clignet, was also at our event, and assisted in the pushing-off for the 2up teams.  Marion had also ridden and spoken at the charity event on Saturday – having epilepsy herself. (Her story is quite remarkable – check her out if you get a chance).

Riders  signing-on could opt to donate to the charity and enter a draw to ride a 2up with the man himself – and this year’s winner was our own Dave Radcliffe, actually riding his first TT! With some tips from the ex-pro and former hour record-holder Jens, they recorded a creditable 27.21  in their 2up.  Our friend Jon Legg (Sotonia CC) is now considering retiring, being now one of a very select number of riders to have overtaken Jens in a TT – and thus achieving legend status!

Nick Tarmey of VC Venta was fastest, posting 21.30 – a superb ride in the windy conditions.  Club chairman Pat Lafford was second – a successful debut for his new Speedsuit and pointy hat!  Simon Wheeler was next Crabwood in 26.05 (riding his new bike provided by Felt following the breakage of his previous machine)  and Supervet Brian Coupe an excellent third in 26.39.  10 Crabwood riders in a TT must the the most for a few seasons! - including two new members Dave Ricketts and Cath Wallace, making their TT debuts.

Mary Corbett (Sotonia CC), riding with Matt Parton (Antelope RT) - a Crabwood member in his youth – (his first TT in many years!) as part of her Tandem Tart challenge, raising money for the ME Association, came home in 27.33. with sales of some delicious cakes (always popular with hungry cyclists) boosting her funds.

Thanks as always to our timekeepers, Dave Crocker and Roy Budd, and pusher-off Colin Smith.  A big Thank You to Julian Wherrett and Robert Ridley, both of Sotonia CC, for answering our appeals for helpers, meaning that Claire was able to ride the event.  Thanks to all those who participated in the lottery, donating £5 each – and some who kindly donated though declining the chance to ride with Jens.  At least £80 was raised at our event, for Epilepsy UK.

Finally, thanks to all riders for heeding the warnings and taking care on the loose gravel - and with the much increased traffic caused by the Brockenhurst marathon.  See you all again soon!
